In 1961, Alan Kaufman traveled to Mississippi along with several hundred other students – white and black – who took buses and trains into the South to challenge Jim Crow. They were arrested and sent to jail, in Alan’s case 23 days in Mississippi’s Parchman State Penitentiary, a maximum security facility.
