At yesterday’s Platform Miguel Brito, CEO of Philips Educational Partners, was interviewed by our own Janet Glass about his work bringing educational opportunities to inner city kids. Philips Educational Partners runs two charter schools, Philips Academy of Newark and Philips Academy of Paterson, and has its roots in St. Philip’s Academy of Newark where he was Head of School. Prior to coming to St. Philips he was Director of College Guidance and Testing for 17 years at The Dwight Englewood School in Englewood, New Jersey.
Miguel inspired us with a vision of what an inner city school can be like without regimentation and with less attention paid to test scores and more to the loving treatment of kids. Like all charter schools, admission is by lottery and 86% are African-American and 8% are Latino. 95% of graduates are accepted into 4-year colleges.
