We begin with nonfiction (though we am open to fiction) by reading the Sixth Extinction by Elizabeth Kolbert, a science writer for the New Yorker who presents a convincing and sobering case that we are in the middle of the 6th great die off or extinction of all existing life on the earth.
Possible future selections Bettyville by George Hodgman a gay NY writer who returns to Missouri to care for his debilitated mother, the End of Your Life Book Club by Will Schwalbe, who shares great books with his dying mother, Michael Pollen’s the Omnivore’s Dilemma, a book about the current crisis in food production. Roberta Skloots The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lack (a really big book on college campuses for a while), which raises issues of our genetic destinies.
We hope to use these books to discuss the issues and to get to know each other better as we discuss how they apply to our lives. We are open to book ideas by group members.
