Oct. 5: ‘These Wilder Years’

James Cagney as you’ve never seen him—not a gangster or a song-and-dance man but a middle-aged, high-powered businessman trying to find the son he abandoned years ago. A humane film about love, fatherhood and responsibility. (1956)

Nov. 3: ‘An Act of Defiance’

In apartheid-ruled South Africa, a renowned lawyer struggles to hide his secret affiliation to the nation’s chief resistance movement as he takes on defending a group of its arrested members, including its leader, Nelson Mandela. (2017)

This is a special event in conjunction with the Teaneck International Film Festival and sponsored by the Ethical Culture Society of Bergen County and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday Committee. Tickets are required. See Teaneck Film Festival for details.

Dec. 7: ‘The Retrieval’

As war ravages the nation in 1864, it’s business as usual for slave-owners and traders. Will, a fatherless 13-year-old, survives by working with a white bounty hunter. On a mission into the free North to find Nate, a fugitive freedman, things go wrong and Will and Nate find themselves on the run. Will is consumed by conflicting emotions as he must decide whether to betray the father figure he’s finally found or risk being killed by his gang. (2013)
