Platform: Intelligence + Character: Dr. King’s Formula for Education

January 9 @ 11:00 am - 12:30 pm

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was not solely interested in raising the capacity of children to think. He believed that a person with full faculties of reason yet lacking in moral character was a menace to society. As our economy has become more technical, so have our educational goals. While this shift may produce more technically savvy youth, does it lead to greater deficits in character? Felix Adler faced this dilemma a hundred years ago when the industrial age sprang forth with vigor in this nation. Our speaker, Interim Leader Curt Collier, asks: What was his take, and how do we avoid sacrificing character education while still advancing in science and math?

Following the platform at 12:30 and using the same Zoom meeting, David Bland will interview immunologist Brianne Barker, PhD, Assistant Professor of Biology at Drew University. Dr. Barker earned her PhD in immunology at Harvard University and is also a co-host of the podcast This Week in Virology. Dr. Barker has made herself available to talk to us about all things COVID including the Omicron variant, the utility of at-home rapid antigen tests, and what the future may hold. There will be time for audience questions.

This platform and special session will be on Zoom. The Zoom link will be in the Weekly Announcements email and may be obtained by emailing
