Ethical Dilemmas Drawn from Real Life

June 25, 2020 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every week that begins at 7:30 pm on Thursday, repeating until June 25, 2020

Would you violate your deeply held moral principles for the sake of important consequences?

Would you call out a stranger who treated a minority person with racist slurs?

Would you help a dying person, if asked, to end her life even if you risked severe criminal sanctions?

Joe Chuman will lead a four-part series of discussions on real-life ethical problems confronted by people like ourselves.

The dilemmas are taken from over 140 scenarios recorded and then transcribed by Dr. Arthur Dobrin, former leader of the Long Island Ethical Humanist Society, professor emeritus at Hofstra University, and a widely published author and ethicist.

Each of our sessions will be based on three to four brief scenarios, which we will make accessible beforehand. They cover areas such as when to compromise our principles in the light of consequences, issues of respecting the dignity of others, obedience to rules, and matters of life and death.

The discussions promise to be lively and engaging and will invite opportunities to share our own thoughts and experiences that relate to the issues at hand.

We need to know how many people wish to participate, so please email admin@ethicalfocus.org to sign up.

The series will be four Thursday evenings, June 4, 11, 18, and 25, from 7:30 to 9 pm via Zoom. The Zoom link will be provided in the Weekly Announcements email and on the members-only Facebook page. In addition, the link can be obtained by emailing admin@ethicalfocus.org
