Many young people today have increased levels of anxiety and depression. Recent research highlights that volunteering and acts of kindness can be effective in reducing feelings of loneliness and isolation, which are common among youth. A study of 51,895 children found that participating in volunteer activities and performing acts of kindness led to notable improvements in health, reduced anxiety and depression, fewer behavioral problems, and increased social interactions.
The Ethical Culture Society of Bergen County hosts a program every Sunday morning, Family & Friends Circle, for learning, engaging in acts of kindness, and volunteering. Instead of separating youth into different classes, both children and parents join a single, large community group. This group collaborates on problem-solving, plans social-action projects, and, each month, participates in community-focused adventures outside the Society.
Learning, social action, helping others–and having fun!
Some examples of recent past projects:
- Volunteering at food pantries to address food and hunger issues
- Supporting an orphanage in Uganda and a community organization in Haiti
- Building a pollinator garden
- Monitoring eels in the Hackensack River
- Creating greeting cards and delivering baskets to elderly residents
- Picking apples, tasting supermarket vs. orchard apples, and making applesauce as part of learning about the food system
- Running an Alex’s Lemonade Stand to raise money for kids with cancer
The group also takes part in local projects and field trips, including overnight excursions to places like Washington DC.
By participating in community activities together, young people develop new skills, build friendships with people of all ages, and are encouraged to collaborate on exploring issues and finding creative solutions. The hour-long program is free and open to youth of all ages.
Open House on Sept. 15, 9:45 am
On Sunday, Sept. 15th, at 9:45 am, we will kick off our new season with an open house. Our “Habit of Kindness” program will feature a free activity calendar that families can use to plan weekly volunteering and kindness activities. This event will also offer opportunities for families to connect with one another and expand their children’s social networks.
This fall we have many fun activities planned, including a mini-golf tournament, volunteering at our “Not Too Scary Haunted House,” and a trip to Philadelphia.
