My mother, Amy Hausner, a longtime member of this Society who passed away on Dec. 22, loved being part of this community, its values and its actions. She always looked forward to attending the Sunday platforms, which she greatly enjoyed.
Amy’s connections with family, friends and community were deep and many. She was a mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin and trusted friend. Amy could be counted on for her thoughtful listening and her belief in fairness and the good in people. Her quiet strength was constant even in the presence of life’s challenges, and her love unconditional.
Decades ago, Amy hosted mailings for peace and political causes at her dining room table for her family and friends. Later she was a teacher’s aide for the deaf, using American Sign Language, and then worked on Community Development projects with Bergen County towns. As an elected committeewoman in Teaneck, she registered hundreds of people to vote. During her last years in Teaneck, before moving to Vermont to live with me and my family, Amy regularly maintained the bulletin board of the Society, frequently stopping by to make sure it was neat and up-to-date.
Amy loved music and sang in several choirs over the years. She loved poetry and literature and received a bachelor of arts degree in Classics from Wheaton College. A lifelong athlete and hiker, she would take her family to Vermont to hike the Green Mountains, where I now live. Amy remained a member of the Society even after moving to Vermont in 2014.
My mom is greatly missed by her family, friends and community. I, my husband Jonathan and Amy’s grandchild Rachel are thrilled to become members of the Ethical Culture Society of Bergen County in her honor.
