On the last Sunday of September/first Sunday of Fall, the Elementary Class of the Sunday School of Ethical Culture of Bergen County had an exciting and educational field trip — exactly across the street from the Meeting House. George and Alison Bond, friends of Ethical Culture, opened up their home property to our children and allowed them to pick apples at their peak of freshness.

Elise, Julio, Cayla, Hazel, and Camille alternatively reached for high-hanging apples and bent over to inspect any good apples that had already fallen to the ground. Teacher Aimee and Co-teachers Hazel and Jacob helped the children inspect their apples, moved branches closer to them, and picked their own harvest. There was much laughter and predictions about what would happen to their apples when they got home: apple pie! fresh apple juice! apple crisp! or maybe just a good crunchy apple that fit in the palm of a child’s hand.

The Elementary Class agreed that because of their good fortune and their ample harvest that it was a good idea to share their bounty with the other education classes and with the Society in general. Comments like “Food tastes better when you share it” were bandied about.

We thank Diane Karzarski for making this field trip possible.
