City of Water Day: Raising Awareness of our Crucial Ecosystem

Our Society, in collaboration with the Northern New Jersey Community Foundation, Fairleigh Dickinson University, and the New York-New Jersey Harbor & Estuary Program, will host a City of Water Day event on Saturday, July 13, from 11 am to 4 pm. This event, which will raise awareness of the Hackensack River’s role in a much larger ecosystem, will be at the MLK Memorial and pedestrian footbridge on the Hackensack side of the river, at the FDU campus.

‘More like a bayou than a river’

City of Water Day activities will include seining for microplankton with Dr. Marion McClary, FDU biologist, and Plein Air art instruction with Mónica Chavarría-Malin. The Ethical Society will provide participants with information on climate change and the Hackensack River’s connection to the Atlantic Ocean. “As many local communities surround the Hackensack River, they should know that this is a tidal estuary–more like a bayou than a river–and that sea-level rise will impact area residents who possibly envision themselves far from the seashore,” said Leader Curt Collier, organizer of the Society’s City of Water Day.

Our City of Water Day event, funded by a grant from the Waterfront Alliance and New York-New Jersey Harbor & Estuary Program, is one of dozens in the region, which includes North Jersey, New York City, and Westchester and Rockland counties, to promote a climate-resilient New York and New Jersey Harbor.
