What Was It About Community Weekend?

What was it about the Community Weekend that filled the cup of joy in my heart so full?

Was it hearing the stories people shared about communities they’ve been part of, during the Friday night “Do Tell” icebreaker? It was fun to hear about the groups that people have been part of on their way to the Ethical Culture Society of Bergen County.

Was it the vista from the top of Bear Mountain, and the fascinating beauty of nature we saw on the hike down? Was it seeing the young people of our Society, ever growing into maturity? The laughter and giggling, sounds of kids free to roam in the safety of the Stony Point Center made my heart dance.

Was it the times we sat and ate together, with time to slow down, and talk, and connect for an hour and not just a few minutes? Luxurious.

Was it the healthful food they served us? Was it the unhealthy snacks we brought? Was it staying up late with a friend and a seemingly bottomless bottle of wine?

Was it the kickball game? OK, it might not’ve been the kickball game, but at least we gave it a go!

Was it the transportive meditation? The arts and crafts projects? The theater games? The Zumba? The Socrates Café? Each of these a gift, shared by SilviaRobDianaTerri

Was it the campfire, the s’mores, Curt‘s corny magic tricks? Definitely!

Was it the music shared so generously by so many, young and old, throughout the weekend?

Was it swaying on a hammock with a cool breeze and a warm sun?

Yes, surely it was all of these things and more.

But the thing that truly filled my cup to overflowing was the Sunday morning Gathering, during which I got to share with each person my deep thanks and appreciation–not just for the contributions they made while participating in and co-creating this amazing community weekend–and to thank each person for being who they are, bringing their unique and authentic selves, standing right in close together where we could enjoy and appreciate and take time to see each other. And then, to receive the thanks and feel the love as the circle of people followed behind me! It was a beautiful and moving experience that has not yet left me these weeks later. I am already looking forward to next year.
