Our Society Mourns Edith Levine

Bob and Ede at home recently.

By Joe Chuman

It is with great sadness that I inform you that our esteemed member Edith Levine died early Saturday morning at the hospice at Holy Name Hospital. Edith had recently suffered from what was most likely COVID-19, but had long endured orthopedic problems that had grown more severe and limiting over the past year. Edith was 92 years old.

Edith was a very devoted member of the Bergen Ethical Society. She and husband Bob joined the Society in the 1950s, left for several years, and then rejoined our community about 20 years ago. Edith and Bob enthusiastically attended our platforms. With a sharp and agile mind, Edith often expressed her thoughtful opinions on politics and society. She and Bob also engaged, enjoyed, and enriched immensely the social life of our community.

Edith and Bob moved to the Five Star residence in Teaneck several years ago, where they acquired new friends. Edith and Bob were a most engaged and loving couple, who always seemed to be together and were devoted to each other in a marriage of mutual support and caring. They had looked forward to celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary this fall.

Edith, toward the end, was surrounded by her beloved family. Bob will be moving to Ithaca, NY, temporarily to live with their daughter, Jane, and her family until the fading of the pandemic enables him to comfortably return to his home in Teaneck. Until then, you can send cards to Bob at Jane’s home:

You can also reach Bob by email, [email protected], or by phone, 201-914-9502.

We will all miss Edith and her lively spirit. A memorial service will be held at some as yet unspecified time in the future.

In fellowship and sorrow,

Joe
