The Sunday School children of the Ethical Culture Society of Bergen County commemorated Martin Luther King Junior Day of Service on January 25th by decorating cookies for the Society’s homebound members.
Sabine Salandy, the Director of the Sunday School, led elementary and primary classes in a discussion about what it means to serve. Sitting in a circle the children were asked to describe the last time they provided service to someone. Three year old Theresa said she helped her mommy by giving her a hug. Kayla, six years old, said she help her mom clean up.
The kids and teachers then turned to the person on either side and asked if there was any way they could help them. Asked how they felt offering to help one another, the group said they felt good about themselves and more connected.
After the discussion, assistant Rachel Bland led the combined classes in cookie decorating activity. Samantha Stankiewicz helped the children draw designs on paper plates. The cookies were packaged in the paper plates and tied with ribbon. The packaged cookies were then delivered by the students and their families to Society members that have not been able to make it to platform or other events because of illness or infirmity.
