The Martin Luther King, Jr. We Do Not Know:Speaker: Dr. Joseph Chuman, leader of the Ethical Culture Society of Bergen County

Martin Luther King Jr. was a towering figure who had few equals. He is worthy of a national holiday, sure, but one of the most effective ways to neutralize or sanitize a great figure is to turn him or her into a national holiday, to transform him into an icon acceptable to the largest cross-section of Americans. What is often missing in discussions of King is the analysis of American injustice that he militantly believed was necessary to move society to where it needed to be to fulfill the promise of the Declaration of Independence. We need to re-invoke the message of the radical, not sanitized, King so that his deeper commitments are not marginalized.
