Barbara Katz Rothman, Professor, CUNY-NY “Spoiling the Pregnancy”

Americans speak of pregnancy as ‘expecting.’ and babies as ‘arriving.’  Those words erase the pregnancy, as if one were expecting a package to arrive in the mail. Dutch midwives, talking to me about prenatal testing, used the phrase ‘spoiling the pregnancy,’  seeing the pregnancy itself as a thing of value and beauty — and at risk of being spoiled

Dr. Barbara Katz Rothman, is Professor of Sociology at the City University of New York.  Her books, published in the U.S., Great Britain, Finland, Germany and Japan, include: IN LABOR; THE TENTATIVE PREGNANCY; RECREATING MOTHERHOOD.
